Student Accommodation Appeals

Students with disabilities who need an accommodation or service for their academic, housing and campus access needs should submit a request to Student Accessibility Services (SAS)through their online form. If the student needs to renew an approved accommodation, they should consult with SAS’ guide for returning students.

Students with disabilities may appeal a denial of a requested accommodation or service to the Deputy ADA Coordinator in the Office of Institutional Equity and Accessibility (OIEA).

A student who receives a denial of a requested accommodation from SAS may request a review of the decision by the SAS Director. If the student wishes to appeal the Director’s determination after this review, they should complete the Student Appeal Form. The student must give SAS permission to share their self-report, any documentation, and related information with OIEA for review.

The Deputy ADA Coordinator may request detailed information from the student and SAS and may gather additional information from or consult with those previously involved in the decision (e.g., the faculty member, program director, Dean’s Office, etc.). The Deputy ADA Coordinator’s review will include a review of any information and documentation submitted by the student and provided by SAS and may include interviews with the appellant and relevant staff from SAS as appropriate. The Deputy ADA Coordinator will maintain as much confidentiality as is practicable and will only share information on a need-to-know basis.

Upon review of the student’s written request and supporting information, the Deputy ADA Coordinator will notify the student and SAS of the determination in writing via email. There is no further appeal after OIEA’s decision.

The Deputy ADA Coordinator will strive to complete review and issue findings within 30 calendar days of the initiation of the process.

The Deputy ADA Coordinator will not review reports of discrimination pursuant to Yale’s Policy Against Discrimination and Harassment related to matters reviewed through this appeal process.

Inquiries concerning this policy may be directed to the Office of Institutional Equity and Accessibility’s Deputy ADA Coordinator, Jamaal Thomas: equity@yale.edu; 203-432-0852; or Wall Street, William L. Harkness Hall, 3rd Floor.
