Yale Visitors and Guests

Yale is committed to providing equal access to and full participation in its programs and activities to all people with disabilities and strive to provide full accessibility to all visitors with disabilities.

Alumni who need a reasonable accommodation to access or participate in a university sponsored program or activity at Yale should consult with the Office of Institutional Equity and Accessibility or submit an accommodation request.

All other visitors and guests should consult with the departments, programs and event organizers if they need a reasonable accommodation to access or participate in a university sponsored program. An accommodation is reasonable if it helps an individual with a disability access a program or activity and does not fundamentally alter the nature of the program and does not place an undue hardship on the institution.

Arrangements should be made in advance of the actual visitation date. A minimum of ten business days’ notice is recommended for any accommodation. Please note that while accommodations that involve professional services (i.e., interpreters, transcription, etc.) will typically require ten business days to arrange, less notice might be sufficient to provide enlarged print or electronic copies of handouts or program brochures.

Visiting Yale: Yale University’s campus in the heart of New Haven features many historical buildings. Information for navigating campus includes maps, transportation, and parking services. Accessible restrooms are available in a number of locations on campus.

The Yale Visitor Center works with individuals with accommodation needs to allow them access to all of the programs and tours scheduled through the center. If you or a member of your group believe that they will require a specific accommodation, please notify the Visitor Center(link is external) as soon as possible. Accommodations for visitors such as assistive listening devices, interpreters, and temporary proximate parking may be arranged by contacting the office at 203-432-2302. Please make this request at least two weeks in advance of the date needed.

Accessible Parking on Campus: There are designated accessible metered parking spaces throughout Yale’s campus on New Haven streets. These are first-come, first-serve and do require use of the meter by Connecticut State Law. Accessible parking tags and license plates from other U.S. states are honored in the city. Any parking issues should be reported to Yale Parking (parking@yale.edu/203-432-9790).

Campus Transportation Services:  There is a fixed shuttle route that operates within the Yale community. Both are managed and operated by Yale’s Parking and Transit Department. All shuttles have wheelchair lifts for access by persons with disabilities. Any service concerns should be reported to Yale Transit (transit@yale.edu/203-737-3081 or 203 432-3266 during business hours) and any accessibility issues should be reported to OIEA (link to barrier form).

To learn more about the fixed shuttle route, see Yale University Shuttle Services.

Yale Art Gallery: The Gallery is committed to making its collection, buildings, programs, and exhibitions accessible to all audiences. All public areas of the Gallery are wheelchair accessible (and it has a wheelchair accessible entrance). The Gallery also provides assistive listening devices and specialized access tours for visitors who are blind or partially sighted. Please consult the Gallery’s website for more information.

Yale Center for British Art: The Yale Center for British Art is dedicated to providing the best possible experience to all visitors. All tours can be adapted to address individual needs and the museum’s classrooms, galleries, Reference Library and Study Room are accessible by wheelchair. Visitors with limitations related to mobility can also request assistance to attend programs in the Lecture Hall (and are requested to arrive ten minutes before the start of the program). The museum also offers sign language interpretation for tours, visits and programs with two weeks notice. Please consult the museum’s website for more information. To learn more about the museum’s educational programming and tours, visit their Access Programs page.

Yale Peabody Museum: The Yale Peabody Museum has multiple wheelchair accessible entrances and is designed to be accessible to all visitors.

Event planners and organizers are encouraged to review Yale’s Guidelines for Accessible Events and guidance on captions for live events. If an organizer or planner has a question about reasonable accommodations for visitors and guests, they are encouraged to consult with the Office of Institutional Equity and Accessibility
